Galerie Larock-Granoff
Marc Chagall , France
"Chagall, un rêve fabuleux"
The Larock-Granoff Gallery celebrates its 100th anniversary with a unique exhibition dedicated to Marc Chagall, whose works were the first to be presented by Katia Granoff.
One hundred years ago, Katia Granoff, founder of the Larock-Granoff gallery, took her first steps into the artistic world, a world she would forever leave her mark upon. A visionary, she decided to represent and support the artists of her time with passion: “There must be a spiritual marriage, a very strong connection between the painters and me.”
The story of this committed and visionary woman is intimately linked to Marc Chagall, as he was the first artist she chose to support and exhibit. One hundred years ago, Katia offered Marc Chagall’s works to her Parisian clients; now, a century later, the gallery commemorates this legacy with a unique exhibition.
Starting from May 15th, the gallery invites visitors to delve into the fabulous imagination of this essential artist, blending Russian and French cultures in his iconic themes. For the first time, around twenty works from the series “The Fables of La Fontaine,” created by Marc Chagall between 1926 and 1927, will be showcased. These creations, commissioned by Ambroise Vollard in the late 1920s, are part of a set of one hundred gouaches.
Exhibited in Paris, Brussels, and Berlin in 1930, they were all sold and dispersed worldwide. Although Vollard had contemplated a color edition in 1928, this project failed after several unsuccessful attempts. It wasn’t until the years 1950-1951 that Chagall rediscovered the one hundred plates he had engraved in 1929 and 1930, allowing the two-volume edition by André Tériade in 1952.
The exhibition will also feature a collection of paintings dating from the 1960s to the 1980s, offering an immersion into the artist’s folkloric universe that merges Eastern and Western cultures. Visitors will encounter his recurring themes such as music, the circus, Paris, as well as self-portraits.
Finally, as part of the Paris Gallery Weekend on May 24th-26th, 2024, and in collaboration with the Friends of Marc Chagall Association, visitors will have the opportunity to discover unpublished excerpts from the correspondence that began in 1923 between Katia Granoff and Chagall, unveiling their unique relationship for the first time.

The gallery
Founded in 1924, the Larock-Granoff gallery is an institution showcasing a variety of contemporary, modern, and impressionist artists. It was Katia Granoff, one of the first women gallery owners, who decided to establish the gallery when she settled in Paris. She is renowned for artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre Laprade, and Marc Chagall, discovered by its founder and whose works the gallery still possesses and exhibits. The gallery also champions artists who have shaped the history of 20th and 21st-century art, such as Joan Miró, Amédée Ozenfant, Jean Messagier, Karel Appel, and Marc Devade. 2024 marks the centenary of the Larock-Granoff Gallery, making it one of the oldest galleries in Paris.
