"Art is a serious game"
CARTE BLANCHE
Carte blanche for Laure Saffroy-Lepesqueur
Art is a serious game playfully enjoys the clichés that would make art and its history strictly serious matters and seeks not to deny the pleasure of being able to create something funny. Starting from the canvas ‘Venus and Mars’ by Sandro Botticelli (circa 1483), whose analysis reveals surprises and cheekiness, several artists were invited to share with us their various humorous, ironic, detached, or light-hearted views on art. By thwarting certain codes, highlighting some elitism, and advocating for mockery or detachment, the exhibition aims to be gently impertinent and hopes to be amusing and witty enough to bring together scholars and simple enthusiasts. Art is a serious game is a profound reflection on humor and a joke in the form of art history.

The gallery
The Droste Gallery, based in Düsseldorf and Paris, is a contemporary art gallery that aims to be dynamic and committed to several engagements. Since 2016, it has been strengthening the positions of artists from the international contemporary scene, mainly figurative, whose major practices are expressed through painting, drawing, and sculpture. It reaffirms its place in the market by daring the expressive postures of artists who challenge the paradigms of European art history and by questioning a conventional vision of art. Within the young current scene of galleries, Droste Gallery promotes a collaborative approach to create stimulating synergies and respectful exchanges. Thus, the gallery also joins the ranks of institutions that do not want to turn away from societal changes and its challenges: it strives to cultivate living together, promote responsible practices, highlight diverse cultural and social currents, and above all, support young artists, while maintaining its unique Franco-German identity.
The Droste Gallery is a member of the New Art Dealers' Alliance (NADA) and the Professional Committee of Art Galleries (CPGA).
