Galerie Lelong & Co.
Marion Verboom , Etats-Unis
"Da coda"
Marion Verboom’s works embody some of the most recent developments in contemporary sculpture, while remaining firmly rooted in history. They strike with the diversity of materials, forms, and colors, and can be subject to multiple levels of interpretation. Verboom’s sculpture is often associated with the notion of hybridization, as she brings together elements that seem distant or even opposed to create new forms: parts of musical instruments, mechanical objects, or anthropomorphic representations combine in a poetic narrative that piques the viewer’s curiosity. However, this sculpture is anything but anecdotal: the references to personal or collective roots are numerous, as is the recourse to art history (as evidenced by the series of Madonnas, and in the new works, references to Bourdelle and Maillol). Marion Verboom places artistic gesture and technical experimentation at the center of her practice: porcelain takes on a sometimes glazed, sometimes matte appearance, contrasting with the crystal that in her latest works evokes the milky whiteness of alabaster.
For her first exhibition at Galerie Lelong & Co., four Achronies will be presented, a superposition of elements of different shapes, colors, and materials that rise in columns and evoke “core sampling,” these cylindrical samples of soil that lead us to a better understanding of the geology and archaeology of a place. These are intimate and contemporary archaeologies, where modelings of a clock mechanism, a double portrait of Virginia Woolf and Simone de Beauvoir, a Merovingian capital, and a flute element are stacked. Conversing with these totems, small-format sculptures, characters, and bas-reliefs in clay and glass will also be presented.

The gallery
The creation of the gallery in 1945 in Paris, by Aimé Maeght, was marked, during the first thirty years, by the presentation of major artists such as Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tàpies, and Francis Bacon. Upon Maeght's death in 1981, the gallery took its current name, led by three equal partners, Jacques Dupin, Daniel Lelong, and Jean Frémon (J. Dupin passed away in 2012, the year D. Lelong handed over the presidency to J. Frémon, current head of the galleries in Paris and New York).
From the 1980s, significant artists such as Pierre Alechinsky, Louise Bourgeois, Konrad Klapheck, and Jannis Kounellis, among others, joined the gallery. Galerie Lelong New York opened in 1985, directed since 1990 by Mary Sabbatino, expanding the program to include prominent figures from the Latin American art scene: Alfredo Jaar, Ana Mendieta, Cildo Meireles, Hélio Oiticica, and Zilia Sánchez. Today, the gallery continues its history, showcasing leading artists from the global art scene such as Etel Adnan, Leonardo Drew, Barry Flanagan, Günther Förg, David Hockney, Sam Levi Jones, Nalini Malini, David Nash, Jaume Plensa, Sean Scully, Kiki Smith, Nancy Spero, and Barthélémy Toguo. The gallery has developed the production of monumental sculptures destined for public spaces with artists such as Jaume Plensa, Ursula von Rydingsvard, and Jean Dubuffet (thanks to a privileged relationship with the Fondation Dubuffet).
More than 180 catalogs have been published since 1981, including the comprehensive catalog of Joan Miró's work (14 volumes), in collaboration with the artist's estate. On the ground floor of the Paris gallery, a space is dedicated to original prints; each year sees the production of new editions in close collaboration with the artists. An additional exhibition space was opened on Avenue Matignon in 2018.
The gallery participates in major international contemporary art fairs: Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel Hong Kong, Paris+ by Art Basel, Frieze London, Frieze New York, Frieze Seoul, Arco, Art Brussels, Art Antwerp, and Luxembourg Art Week.
