La Galerie Rouge
Martine Barrat
"Martine Barrat, Soul of the City"
Galerie Rouge presents a solo show by French photographer and videographer Martine Barrat, who has been based in New York since 1968. Barrat’s work has largely developed outside traditional circuits and revolves around a central theme: New York and its marginalized communities. In the early 1970s, she photographed gangs in the Bronx, followed by children from boxing clubs and residents of Harlem in the 1980s and 1990s. Her ongoing curiosity for life on the streets and its codes and modes of interaction led her to witness the birth of cultural and musical movements such as hip-hop. Her gaze is driven by an equal and eye-to-eye confrontation with her subjects, with whom she shares daily life – with participatory and collective engagement constituting a fundamental dimension of her work.
Solo show of Martine Barrat
From May 25th to September 7th, 2024
