Ricardo Fernandes grants Carte blanche to Kássia Borges Mytara as part of the exhibition  “Femme Jibóia”, from April 19th to June 2nd, 2025.

Kássia Borges Mytara is a Brazilian indigenous curator and artist, whose trajectory is marked by a deep connection with her culture and by advocacy for the preservation of her people’s traditions. Currently, in indigenous communities, it is increasingly recognized that curating should be carried out by indigenous people, ensuring that narrative and history are authentically preserved and told in a real way, by those who live the experience of the community.

The curatorship of her own first solo exhibition in Paris is therefore historic, and offers many advantages to the artist, who can ensure that the representation of her culture is accurate and complete. Kássia Borges Mytara’s unique perspective as a member of the indigenous community enables her to incorporate cultural and spiritual elements in a way that respects and enhances the traditions of her people.

Curating her own exhibition is, therefore, an act of personal and community empowerment: Kássia Borges Mytara exercises control over how her art and culture are presented to the public, showing that indigenous peoples have a voice and agency in the representation of their own history. This not only enriches the exhibition, but also fosters greater awareness and respect for indigenous culture.

Curating by Kássia Borges Mytara therefore creates a deeper and more meaningful connection with the public, sharing her personal experiences and perspectives, enriching the visitor experience and fostering a comprehensive understanding of indigenous culture past and contemporary. Her exhibition serves as a testament to the resistance and resilience of indigenous communities in the face of historical and contemporary challenges, highlighting the strength and perseverance of her people. In this way, the artist’s curatorship not only enriches the exhibition, but also fosters greater awareness and respect for indigenous culture, making the exhibition unique and bringing the essence of Brazil’s indigenous peoples to Paris.
