Galerie Marion Chauvy
Monica Jahan Bose et Anju Chaudhuri
"Sustenance 2024"
The gallery is pleased to present the exhibition « Sustenance 2024 » with the artists Monica Jahan Bose and Anju Chaudhuri from April 2 to May 28, 2024
The American artist from Bangladesh Monica Jahan Bose has exhibited on numerous occasions in Paris, including at UNESCO in 2009. Her last collaboration with Anju Chaudhuri in Washington D.C. dates from 2019. In the American environmental context and for Monica Jahan Bose, who has long explored marine ecosystems in the face of global warming, the 2019 exhibition at the Carrol Square Gallery reflected more the Anacostia, a river crossing the American capital, than the Ganges. More than five years later, the Parisian exhibition bears witness, whatever the borders, to the same observation, Anju
Chaudhuri’s swirling compositions on the theme of water resonate with Monica Jahan Bose’s acrylics and woodcuts, representing fishes, rivers and oceans, highlighting the continuity of the environmental concern shared by the two artists over times and places.
The two artists of the same origin, Monica Jahan Bose based in Washington and Anju Chaudhuri based in Paris, maintain a continuous link with the
ir ancestral land: the Bay of Bengal. Their respective homes found themselves in two different countries in 1947, but the same cultural values animate their artistic and social experience. The presentation evokes as much the spirituality of Hindu cosmogonic myths in the work of Anju Chaudhuri, as the activist and multidisciplinary dimension of Monica Jahan Bose in her relationship with Nature in environmental and cultural terms.
In the context of globalization, their collaboration integrating different places and temporalities, rebalances the balance of power between countries lacking visibility, powerless to promote their cultures, and countries benefiting from international recognition.
